Liverpool's most exciting and ground-breaking theatre companies emerged from Hope Street, having met on the award-winning Physical Theatre Programme (which ran from 1994 to 2005) or during the renowned and highly respected apprenticeship programme.

Tmesis, Spike, Ullaloom and Rejects Revenge are perhaps the most well known. More recently, Caustic Widows, Random Acts of Wildness (RAW), Suitcase Ensemble, Refresh and Fool's Proof, met whilst training at Hope Street and set themselves up as successful small scale touring theatre companies.

As part of our commitment to nurturing emerging artists, we provide an incubation and mentoring programme for companies that emerge from Hope Street. This includes artistic and business support, individual action planning, networking opportunities and free rehearsal space and equipment. In 2009/10 we provided over £20,000 in kind support to companies we are currently nurturing.

"Hope Street has supported Tmesis since we set up as a company in 2003. Their advice, support, guidance and use of facilities and networks have been invaluable and helped us develop rapidly. We are now an associate company of Hope Street and have an office space in the building; we also work in partnership on Physical Fest - an annual physical theatre workshop festival, and directed one of Hope Street's productions in 2008."
Elinor Randle, Tmesis.

In a complicated and potentially confusing arts arena, Hope Street helped us to find the right path for our company. We would not be where we are today without them.
Jenny de Ornellas, Capricho.

"As part of the apprenticeship programme in 2007, Hope Street offered me the opportunity to work alongside respected industry professionals on ambitious projects which were performed in theatres, circus tents and public spaces for a general rather than artistic or academic audience. Since then, I have set up a theatre company with other apprentices who I met whilst there. Through advice, access to space and resources and the provision of mentors, Hope Street has been fundamental to our existence and we are now firmly establishing ourselves with touring and site specific work."
Andy Gledhill, Suitcase Ensemble.

Fully-emerged director Adam McGuigan, a few years ago toured Africa with a one-man street show. He spent 2 years travelling 30 countries delivering workshops and performances and fulfilled his aim: to inspire, provoke and entertain, and to work with groups to pass on skills to enable them to work on their own pieces of theatre.

Adam now works with Bare Feet Theatre Company in Zambia and has participated in the Contacting the World project, which took place in Liverpool in July 2008.
